The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has referred the case involving Afropop musician, Simisola Kosoko, better known as Simi, over her resurfaced tweets to the Commissioner of Police for preliminary investigation amid the ongoing dispute surrounding the matter.
During an interview with the media, the Executive Secretary of the agency, Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, said it would be very difficult to prosecute Simi unless there is a survivor willing to testify.
“We cannot act like we have not seen this case and so we have a duty to at least commence a preliminary investigation. Is there any survivor? Because the truth of the matter is that it is going to be very difficult to prosecute the lady without a survivor being present,” she said, urging anyone allegedly affected to come forward.
Vivour-Adeniyi emphasised that the agency could not ignore the allegations surrounding the old tweets in which Simi made offensive comments about children in her mother’s daycare, which drew widespread criticism.
In her defence, Simi maintained that the tweets reflected her past experiences as a young person and were not made out of perversion, adding that they were blown out of context and misinterpreted by the public.
The agency’s boss explained that the case was referred to the police to establish the facts, especially amid reports that the alleged incident may have occurred in a crèche managed by the singer’s mother, raising safeguarding and child protection concerns.
She added that the state’s safeguarding taskforce has been briefed and preliminary investigations are ongoing, noting that prosecution would only be possible if a formal complaint is made.
