Lagos gives travel advisory ahead of major road rehabilitation

The Lagos State Government has released a traffic management plan ahead of the reconstruction of Ogunnusi Road in Ikeja.

According to the ministry of works, the reconstruction is part of a broader plan to upgrade the 9.0-kilometre dual carriage corridor linking both inbound and outbound sections of the road and is designed to allow the ministry commence the first phase of the road expansion project without major disruptions to movement

While addressing road users, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, noted that the entire project will run in phases from March 6, 2026, to January 6, 2028, with phase one spanning 4.5 kilometres, beginning from Ojodu-Berger bus-stop inward to Mobil filling station junction, noting that this phase is expected to start on March 6, 2026, and end on February 6, 2027.

He further indicated that there will be no vehicular access within the designated construction zone during the period, while explaining that the decision is necessary to ensure the smooth execution of the works.

“Motorists travelling inward Ijaye and Agege through Ogunnusi Road will be diverted to use a contraflow on the Ojodu-Berger bound carriageway for about one kilometre before rejoining the main carriageway. Alternatively, drivers may use Dr. Nurudeen Olowopopo Way to connect to Otunba Jobifele Way, then to Obafemi Awolowo Way and Lateef Jakande Road to reach their destinations.”

“Articulated vehicle and truck drivers coming from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and heading toward Agege have been advised to take alternative routes. They are to pass through Ojota and Maryland, link Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, connect to Kodesoh Street and Oba Akran Avenue, then proceed through Guinness Roundabout to Ogba Road and Pen Cinema.”

“Motorists travelling from Ijaye and Agege toward Ojodu-Berger will initially experience normal traffic flow. However, on approaching the construction zone, they will be diverted into a contraflow arrangement for about one kilometre before regaining full access to the road after the work area,” Osinyemi said.

The commissioner added that emergency tow vehicles will be stationed strategically along the corridor to ensure quick response to breakdowns and incidents, amid urging motorists to remain patient, obey traffic signs, and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed to manage movement throughout the construction period.
