Lagos govt reaffirms commitment to transparency, accountability in public service

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Internal Audit (OIA), Mrs Monsurat Titilope Alaka, has reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to strengthening transparency and accountability across all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), while emphasising the crucial role of internal auditors in safeguarding public resources and strengthening governance systems.
Addressing auditors in the state public service during her maiden meeting with them, Mrs Alaka described internal auditors as the backbone of institutional integrity, responsible for ensuring compliance, detecting irregularities and upholding the financial discipline required to sustain public trust.
She urged the auditors to adhere strictly to the values of accountability and integrity, which she said are non-negotiable for anyone entrusted with the sensitive responsibilities of internal audit functions.
Highlighting the demanding nature of the profession, the Permanent Secretary charged auditors to carry out their duties with diligence, discipline and focus. She noted that the expectations placed on internal auditors require a high level of personal responsibility, as their work directly influences the efficiency and credibility of government operations.
Mrs Alaka also stressed the importance of punctuality, responsiveness and full commitment to duty, reminding auditors that every audit assignment demands flexibility and a strong sense of ownership. Without these qualities, she warned, officers risk falling short of service standards.
Speaking on leadership within audit units, she urged senior officers and unit heads to foster supportive and collaborative work environments. She noted that effective leadership involves mentoring subordinates, building healthy professional relationships and communicating instructions clearly—practices that enhance productivity and support the growth of younger officers.
The Permanent Secretary further encouraged auditors to embrace continuous professional development, citing the rapidly evolving nature of modern audit practice. She urged them to pursue new skills, stay updated on advanced audit techniques and adopt global best practices.
Reiterating the OIA’s commitment to excellence, transparency and accountability, Mrs Alaka reminded auditors that their performance reflects the core values of the office. She commended their dedication and expressed optimism that with sustained commitment, internal auditors will continue to strengthen public institutions and enhance good governance across Lagos State.
