Lagos govt urges Trade Fair Complex to utilise building permit amnesty

By Adeola Ogunrinde –
The Lagos State Government has urged the management of the Trade Fair Complex to take advantage of the ongoing Planning Permit Amnesty for existing buildings without approval.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Oluyinka Olumide, gave the advice on Tuesday in Alausa, Ikeja. He noted that several Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, including the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), have already begun the process of regularising their buildings under the programme.
He encouraged the management of the International Trade Fair Complex to emulate other government agencies by hastening to obtain planning permits for structures within the complex during the amnesty window approved by Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.
Dr Olumide stressed that building approval is mandatory for all structures in Lagos State, as stipulated by the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law 2019 (as amended).
He further emphasised the need for owners of buildings without approval to take advantage of the programme to avoid future enforcement actions, noting that planning approval is key to achieving the state’s livable and sustainable city agenda.
The commissioner added that the amnesty initiative aims to enhance urban orderliness and promote compliance across public and private sectors.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that all developments align with established planning standards to safeguard lives and property.
The current amnesty window, the third under Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration, runs from 1 November to 31 December 2025, during which the usual penal fees will be waived.
