Lagos listed among seven art destinations to visit in the world in 2026

Lagos, Nigeria, has been listed as one of the seven must-visit art destinations worldwide in 2026, according to Artsy, an online platform connecting art enthusiasts, artists and museums while showcasing global art events and exhibitions. The recognition highlights Lagos’ emergence as West Africa’s leading hub for contemporary art.
The city will host the fifth edition of the Lagos Biennial from October 17 to December 18, featuring a main exhibition curated by Chinyere Obieze, Furen Dai, and Sam Hopkins. This year’s theme, “The Museum of Things Unseen,” explores ancestry and cultural history through innovative museology, using non-traditional sites that reflect Lagos’ density and political energy.
In addition, The Àkéte Collection – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art will officially open its permanent home in October, aiming to serve as a “living archive” for African art. The 11th edition of the ART X Lagos art fair will also take place from November 5 to 8, showcasing local talent to an international audience.
The city’s art ecosystem continues to thrive year-round. Galleries such as Rele, kó, Ogirikan Art Gallery, and Nike Art Gallery actively support artists shaping contemporary African discourse, while institutions like the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture & History provide deeper historical context to new works.
With its combination of major biennials, vibrant art fairs, and a rapidly evolving creative community, Lagos is firmly on the global map for art enthusiasts in 2026.
