By Adeola Ogunrinde

The Lagos State Government on Sunday signed a Power Purchase Agreement with three electricity generating companies to boost energy supply across the state.

The agreement, witnessed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at Lagos House, Marina, involved the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Abiodun Ogunleye.

The partner firms include Mainland Power Limited, Akute Independent Power Plant, and Fenchurch Power Limited, with the latter joining as a new entrant.

Speaking after the signing, Sanwo-Olu urged all parties to uphold the terms of the agreement, stressing that the initiative is aimed at improving the lives of residents through reliable energy supply.

He described the deal as a major step in ongoing reforms in the energy sector, noting that mutual commitment and professionalism would ensure its success.

Reacting, Ogunleye disclosed that the agreement would boost power generation and revive dormant assets, adding that the companies currently generate about 60 megawatts but could scale up to between 200 and 400 megawatts within a few years.

He explained that Mainland Power Limited operates the Ikeja GRA plant with capacity to supply electricity to key facilities such as Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency.

The commissioner added that the Akute plant, now managed by Fenchurch, is being rehabilitated to serve communities including the Adiyan Water Works, while Viathan Engineering will power critical infrastructure on the Island, including the Lagos State Government House and major health institutions.
