Lagos police arrest notorious armed robber behind Allen Avenue jewellery heist

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of notorious armed robbery kingpin and hired assassin, John Samuel. The 28-year-old ex-convict was apprehended in his hideout in Epe on Thursday, September 19, 2025, around 2:00 p.m., following a coordinated intelligence-led operation by the police.
According to a press statement signed by Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bababseyi Oluseyi, the suspect had recently been released from prison after serving a six-year sentence for armed robbery. Just weeks after his release, Samuel allegedly resumed criminal activities, carrying out a brutal attack on a businessman in Ikeja.
On August 18, 2025, Samuel reportedly shot and severely injured one Gbenga Obama, a businessman, during a daylight robbery at Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue. The attacker, captured on CCTV footage, was seen firing a pistol at the victim before snatching a gold necklace and other valuables. His accomplice was seen waiting on a getaway motorcycle.
The victim survived the gunshot wounds and has since been discharged from the hospital. Investigations revealed that the stolen jewelry was sold for ₦4 million—an amount far below its actual market value.
John Samuel, who has a documented history of violent crimes including robbery, assassination, and murder, confessed to the crime and is now in police custody. Efforts are currently underway to track down and apprehend other members of his gang.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohudare Jimoh, commended the bravery and professionalism of the officers involved in the arrest and assured the public that a discreet but thorough investigation is ongoing. He reiterated the Command’s resolve to rid the state of violent criminals.
“The Lagos State Police Command remains committed to the safety and protection of all residents,” the statement read. “We urge members of the public to go about their lawful activities without fear. Criminals should take note: Lagos has no hiding place for you.”
The Command also called on the public to support ongoing efforts by providing useful information that could aid in the apprehension of other suspects linked to the case.
