The Lagos State Government on Friday announced that 61.52 percent of public secondary school students sponsored by the state in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination obtained five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, disclosed this during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja. He said the performance reflected the impact of ongoing education reforms and targeted learning interventions introduced by the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Alli-Balogun also revealed that the state government committed ₦1.4 billion to sponsor the registration of 45,598 Senior Secondary School III students for the 2026 WASSCE. He said the intervention was aimed at removing financial barriers preventing students from accessing quality education.
According to the commissioner, the improved performance recorded in the 2025 examination was largely driven by the Eko Learners Support Initiative launched in January 2025. He said the programme was designed to close learning gaps, improve examination readiness and give students in public schools equal opportunities to succeed.
“The Eko Learners Support Initiative aims to close learning gaps, improve exam readiness and give every Lagos learner a fair chance to succeed. The results are evident in the 2025 WASSCE, where 61.52 per cent of registered students earned five credits, including English and Mathematics,” he said.
Alli-Balogun said the ministry also distributed instructional materials, including Essential Mathematics textbooks, Fundamental Formulas of English, Bedrock of English Grammar materials and Hope-Edu textbooks, to public secondary schools across the state. He added that smart learning devices were distributed to schools in March 2026 to strengthen digital education and improve access to modern learning tools.
The commissioner further disclosed that the state inaugurated a Teachers Digital Hub in January 2026 to facilitate live streaming of teaching sessions to schools across Lagos. He said the initiative was intended to ensure equal access to quality educational content for students in different parts of the state.
On access to education and infrastructure development, Alli-Balogun said 4,539 candidates applied for admission into Model Colleges and upgraded secondary schools, while 3,024 candidates secured provisional admission, representing a 66.62 per cent admission rate. He added that 15 schools were constructed or rehabilitated in hard-to-reach communities, while 18,122 girls across the six education districts were vaccinated against the Human Papillomavirus under school health intervention programmes.
