Lagos resumes government activities as Sanwo-Olu calls for peace after protests
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, while presiding over the Executive Council Meeting on Monday, announced that the state had resumed full government activities, following a four-day hunger protest that had swept across the country.
Addressing journalists at the Lagos House in Ikeja, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed the resumption of normal activities, stating, “Lagos is peaceful, and that is what Lagosians want. Mr. Governor has resumed the business of the state. Everyone is at their desk, and members of the public are coming in to do business with the government.”
Omotoso emphasized the importance of maintaining order in Nigeria’s commercial hub, adding, “Lagosians cannot allow the city to descend into chaos. We thank the protesters for their service to Lagos. All Lagosians should open and go about their businesses without fear. Lagosians have chosen to be peaceful and shun anarchy.”
He also noted that the state government had received thousands of calls from individuals and groups wanting to engage in dialogue, following the release of three phone numbers for public contact.
In a national broadcast on Sunday, President Bola Tinubu had appealed to the protesters to end their demonstrations to allow for dialogue. Responding to the President’s appeal, protest organizers in Lagos called off their actions, a move commended by Governor Sanwo-Olu.
