Lagos set to host E1 Water Racing Championship in October

Lagos is set to make history as the first African city to host the prestigious E1 Water Racing Championship, scheduled for October 4th and 5th, 2025.
The announcement was made by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during his visit to Monaco over the weekend, where he attended the ongoing edition of the E1 Championship.
Speaking from Monaco, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the experience as a powerful reminder of how innovation, determination, and bold ideas can come together to create groundbreaking developments. He expressed pride in Lagos’ selection as a host city, calling it a major milestone for both the sport and the state.

“This is an opportunity to show the world what makes Lagos special—our culture, our energy, and our people,” the governor said. “It’s a chance to welcome visitors, share our stories, and highlight the incredible potential of our city.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu also extended his gratitude to Afreximbank for its partnership and support, especially in backing Team Drogba and committing to the shared vision of advancing clean energy and sustainable marine transport through the E1 Championship.

The event, which features electric-powered boats racing in coastal cities worldwide, is expected to draw global attention and showcase Lagos as a hub for innovation, sustainability, and world-class tourism.
“We’re bringing a world-class sporting event to our shores,” the governor added. “We’re opening a new chapter for Lagos, and I can’t wait for the world to see what we have to offer.”
