The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce its own driver’s licence in partnership with the Federal Government as part of efforts to improve road safety and strengthen traffic regulation across the state.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Monday during the 2026 annual ministerial press briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja, to mark the second-term seventh anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
Osiyemi said the Lagos State driver’s licence would be launched within the next few weeks and would operate alongside the existing federal driver’s licence system. He explained that motorists would have the option of obtaining either the federal licence or the Lagos-issued licence.
According to the commissioner, the initiative is aimed at improving efficiency, reducing delays in the licensing process and promoting safety and orderliness on Lagos roads. He added that the new system would support the state’s transportation reform agenda, especially in digital enforcement and vehicle monitoring.
The commissioner also said the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service had intensified enforcement of the “No Vehicle Inspection, No Roadworthiness Certificate” policy to remove unroadworthy vehicles from the roads through technology-driven operations.
He disclosed that the state issued 1,114,080 roadworthiness certificates during the review period, reflecting increased compliance with vehicle safety regulations among motorists in Lagos.
Osiyemi further revealed that the state recorded 737,340 traffic violations through the Automated Number Plate Recognition camera system, describing it as a major step toward intelligent traffic management and digital surveillance.
He added that the state, in collaboration with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps, processed 27,067 fresh driver’s licence applications and renewed 29,810 licences, bringing the total number of licences handled within the period to 56,876.
