Lagos teacher bags life sentence for child defilement

The Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, Ikeja, has sentenced a school teacher, Nwatu Isaac, to life imprisonment for defiling an eight-year-old pupil in Epe.
Justice Rahman Oshodi convicted Isaac on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting the pupil on March 10, 2022.
The court held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, relying on the survivor’s testimony, evidence from her mother and medical findings from the medical centre.
Justice Oshodi described the survivor’s evidence as credible and consistent, noting that she identified Isaac in court and recounted how he took her into the school toilet, where he sexually assaulted her.
The judge rejected Isaac’s denial, alibi and other explanations in his defence, finding that the evidence established his presence at the school and involvement in the offence.
While sentencing him, Oshodi said Isaac had abused the trust placed in him as the child’s teacher and as a person entrusted with the safety of children.
The court also ordered that Isaac’s name be entered in the Lagos State Sexual Offenders Register.
It further directed the prosecution to secure appropriate protection and support for the survivor and her family under the Victim Assistance and Witness Protection Law, 2022.
