Lagos to close Oworonshoki/Third Axial Bridge for 110 days – Commissioner

The Lagos State Government has announced a phased traffic diversion plan ahead of emergency repair works on the Oworonshoki/Third Axial Bridge. The repairs are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 6, and conclude on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, lasting a total of 110 days.

According to a statement from the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the repair work will be executed in eight phases across both lanes of the bridge. Phases 1 to 4, which will run from May 6 to July 14, will cover the inbound section of the bridge leading to the Third Mainland Bridge. Phases 5 to 8, from July 15 to September 23, will address the outbound section toward Oworonshoki.

During the first phase, motorists heading to Oshodi or Victoria Island through Oworonshoki will be diverted about 50 metres before the work zone and redirected back to their original route shortly after the affected area.

Osiyemi advised commuters approaching from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to reroute via the Ojota Slip Road, continue onto Ikorodu Road, and connect to Anthony, where they can turn right at the Taxi Park to reach Oshodi. Alternate routes include travelling from Mowe through Ojota and Funsho Williams Avenue to access Eko Bridge and Victoria Island, or from Ikeja through Maryland and Funsho Williams Avenue to Outer Marina. Drivers heading to Oshodi from Ikeja can also take Ikorodu Road through Maryland, turn at Anthony near the Taxi Park, and proceed to Oshodi.

When repairs move to the outbound section on July 15, motorists heading to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway via Oworonshoki will also be diverted 50 metres before the work zone and merged back to their lane afterward.

Commuters from Victoria Island heading to Alapere, Ketu, and Ikorodu are encouraged to use Eko Bridge and continue on Funsho Williams Avenue through Ikorodu Road. Those travelling to Mowe and surrounding areas can follow Eko Bridge through Funsho Williams Avenue and proceed via the Abiola Garden Ramp.

The Commissioner assured that Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) personnel will be deployed to manage traffic throughout the repair period. He urged motorists to remain patient and cooperate with traffic officials, noting that the partial closure is necessary for essential maintenance on the bridge’s expansion joints by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to minimising disruptions while ensuring public safety and the structural integrity of the bridge.
