Lagos youth swimmers shine, sweep 19 golds at National Games

Team Lagos’ under-15 athletes have delivered a historic performance at the ongoing National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, Delta State, winning an impressive 19 gold and four silver medals to assert their dominance in the swimming events.
Speaking on the achievement, Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, said the results reflect Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s unwavering commitment to sports development, modern infrastructure, and the nurturing of young talent across the state.
“The victory of our young champions reflects the Governor’s vision of using sports as a platform for youth empowerment, character building, and international competitiveness. It also reinforces our efforts to deepen community sports and expand opportunities for grassroots participation,” Fatodu stated.

He highlighted the significance of the NYG as an under-15 competition in grooming Nigeria’s future sports stars. “The games provide a unique platform for young athletes to test their skills, showcase potential, and gain invaluable experience on a national stage.
“Beyond the medals, it is a breeding ground where raw talent is transformed into champions capable of representing the country at continental and global levels,” he explained.

Fatodu also praised the parents of the young athletes, particularly the mothers, whose consistent presence and support during the swimming events provided crucial motivation for the athletes to excel.
The Director-General further commended the coaches and staff of the Lagos State Sports Commission for their dedication to training, mentoring, and supporting the athletes, noting that their hard work was central to Team Lagos’ outstanding performance.
He described the results as a testament to teamwork, discipline, and the state’s long-term vision for sports excellence.
