LAMATA, OCCE partner on data-driven, low-carbon transport in Lagos

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and the Office of Climate Change and Circular Economy (OCCE) are strengthening collaboration on data-driven, low-carbon transportation to reduce emissions and improve climate resilience in Lagos State.
The Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, stated this when she received a high-level delegation from OCCE, led by the Special Adviser to the Governor, Mrs Titilayo Oshodi, at the authority’s headquarters.
Akinajo said the engagement focused on climate-smart transportation, carbon financing opportunities and the deployment of reliable emissions data to support Lagos’ transition to cleaner urban mobility.
She said LAMATA’s investments in electric and low-emission public transport, alongside the development of an integrated mass transit system, provided a strong foundation for advancing the state’s climate objectives while ensuring efficient and affordable transportation for millions of residents.
According to her, credible transport data would be critical to measuring the environmental impact of the state’s investments, identifying further opportunities for emissions reduction and positioning Lagos to benefit from emerging global climate-financing opportunities.
During the engagement, the OCCE delegation demonstrated the DecarbonIQ Intelligence Platform, a technology-driven system designed to measure, monitor and manage carbon emissions across transport networks. The platform also provides emissions-reduction advisory services and a central source of carbon data for tracking, validating and verifying emissions information.
Oshodi stressed the need for Lagos to establish a verified single source of carbon data, noting that the transport sector was critical to achieving the state’s climate ambitions, particularly amid growing investments in electric mobility, rail transportation and other low-carbon mass transit solutions.
She further highlighted the platform’s alignment with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which provides mechanisms for international cooperation on climate action and carbon markets.
