LASG plans comprehensive training curriculum to enhance accountants’ professional capacity
The Permanent Secretary of State Treasury Office (STO), and Accountant-General of Lagos State, Dr. Abiodun Muritala has announced that plans are at an advanced stage to introduce a comprehensive training curriculum aimed at enhancing the professional capacity of accountants in the state.
He said that initiative was part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve Financial Management, Accountability, and Service delivery across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
Speaking at a Technical meeting with Directors and Heads of Finance and Accounts Statewide, in Lagos, Muritala disclosed that the training programme will equip Accountants with modern financial skills, technological innovations, and global best practices in public sector accounting.
He emphasised the importance of capacity building, noting that the training was designed to align with the evolving demands of financial management, particularly in the effective handling of public funds.
Supporting Muritala’s position, the newly appointed Permanent Secretary in the State, Mr. Tajudeen Mahmud, described capacity development for accountants as a crucial step toward improving Financial Governance and efficiency in Lagos State.
Citing the example of Oracle, a financial management system that has been in operation for over two decades, he lamented the reluctance of some financial managers to fully embrace its applications.
He urged Accountants to anticipate more reforms and advancements in their profession and to remain open to ongoing digital transformation, emphasising that financial managers must not be left behind.
Mr. Mahmud also took the opportunity to express his appreciation to the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for considering him worthy of a Permanent Secretary position in the public service, assuring his colleagues in the accounting profession of his continued accessibility and willingness to share his wealth of experience whenever needed.
