Late goals earn Arsenal victory over Newcastle

By Tosin Omojola –
Arsenal climbed to second place on the English Premier League table after edging Newcastle 2-1 in dramatic fashion on Sunday.
The Gunners scored two late goals to secure a well-deserved win at St. James’ Park.
Mikel Arteta’s men trailed by a lone goal until the last six minutes of the encounter, after the hosts had gone ahead through Nick Woltemade’s 34th-minute strike.
Arsenal’s hopes of scoring in the first half were dashed after VAR overturned a penalty decision initially awarded when Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope fouled Viktor Gyökeres.
The Gunners turned it around in the closing stages, with Mikel Merino grabbing the equaliser in the 84th minute, before Gabriel Magalhães sealed the comeback with the winner in the 96th minute.
In a week when other big sides—Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United—suffered defeats, Arsenal’s victory kept them within touching distance of Liverpool at the top of the table, with just two points separating the two teams.
