Lawmakers warn of looming crisis in aviation sector over rising fuel costs

Members of the House of Representatives have urged the Federal Government to take urgent steps to address the rising cost of aviation fuel, warning that the trend is placing severe strain on Nigeria’s aviation industry.
The call followed a resolution reached during Tuesday’s plenary at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Moving the motion, a member of the House, Abdullahi Idris Garba, expressed concern over the steady increase in the price of Jet A1 fuel, noting that it has significantly impacted airline operations and led to higher airfares.
“The persistent rise in aviation fuel costs is crippling the aviation industry and making air travel increasingly unaffordable for Nigerians,” he said.
Garba called on the Federal Ministry of Aviation and other relevant agencies to implement measures aimed at stabilising fuel prices and providing support for domestic airlines.
He added that without prompt intervention, airlines may be forced to scale down operations or shut down entirely due to the high cost of running flights.
In separate contributions, lawmakers stressed the need for coordinated government action to prevent further disruption in the aviation sector and ensure its sustainability.
