Lebara Nigeria launch reflects strong UK–Nigeria ties, Tinubu says

President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the official launch of Lebara Nigeria, describing the development as a strong endorsement of Nigeria’s growing digital economy and its position as a leading technology and investment destination in Africa.

In a statement issued on Saturday, by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said the entry of Lebara into Nigeria’s telecommunications market reflects investor confidence in the country’s reform agenda.

Tinubu noted that the telecommunications sector remains a key driver of economic growth, citing a 5.78 per cent year-on-year growth in the third quarter of 2025 and a contribution of over 14 per cent to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.

He commended the leadership of the new telecom operator, particularly its Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Teniola Stuffman, for efforts aimed at expanding access to telecommunications services, creating jobs and strengthening digital infrastructure nationwide.

The President said investments in the sector are vital for deepening financial inclusion, fostering innovation and accelerating overall economic development.

He also acknowledged the participation of the British High Commission at the launch event, represented by Deputy High Commissioner Mr Jonny Baxter, noting that the support underscores longstanding economic and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Tinubu further recognised the contributions of the Chairman of the Advisory Board, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, and other board members for their roles in bringing the project to fruition.

According to the President, initiatives such as Lebara Nigeria are expected to enhance job creation, youth empowerment, enterprise growth and economic diversification. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to maintaining a stable and transparent investment climate that encourages private sector participation and innovation.
