Lookman scores first La Liga goal to equal Suarez’s record

By Tosin Omojola –
Nigerian international Ademola Lookman opened his La Liga account, scoring in Atletico Madrid’s 4–2 win over Espanyol on Saturday night.
Lookman continued his strong start at Atletico Madrid, taking his tally to four goals in his first six matches across all competitions with his strike in the 25th round of La Liga.
The Super Eagles forward, who recently joined the Spanish side from Atalanta, had previously found the net twice in the Copa del Rey quarter-final win over Real Betis and again in the first-leg semi-final against Barcelona in the same competition.
His tally represents one of the best attacking starts by a player at the club in recent years.
According to statistics available since the 2013–14 season, Lookman now shares the best scoring record for a new Atletico player in his first six matches — a feat previously achieved by Luis Suarez in the 2020–21 season, when the Uruguayan striker began his stint at the club with the same goal return.
The impressive performance highlights the Nigerian’s swift impact in the team’s attacking system, as he has made an early mark through decisive goals and effective movement in the final third.
Atletico Madrid will be hoping Lookman maintains his scoring form as competition intensifies across all tournaments, with the club aiming to secure positive results and challenge for honours.
