LASG refutes claims of resuming monthly sanitation exercise
By Adeola Ogunrinde –
The Lagos State Government has denied reports circulating online that it has resumed the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
The clarification was made on Saturday in a statement issued by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
Wahab said no official date has been announced for the reintroduction of the exercise. He explained that discussions with relevant stakeholders are still ongoing.
According to him, his earlier comments to journalists after a project inspection tour were misinterpreted. He noted that while the government believes the exercise may return soon, no final decision has been taken.
He added that any official announcement on the resumption would be made by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The commissioner further disclosed that the government had planned to begin with a sensitisation programme last week but encountered logistical challenges, whil adding that efforts are being made to fix a date acceptable to all stakeholders.
He urged residents to continue their daily activities without fear, assuring that adequate notice would be given before any reintroduction of the sanitation exercise.
The monthly sanitation, which was suspended in November 2016 following a court ruling against movement restrictions, was previously held on the last Saturday of every month. Renewed concerns over waste management and blocked drainage systems have led to calls for its return.
