LSWMO cracks down on environmental polluters in Ijora, Coker-Aguda

…closes Ijora toilet, Surulere building over untreated wastewater
The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed a public toilet facility at Ijora Olopa and a residential property in Coker-Aguda, Surulere, over environmental pollution and improper discharge of wastewater.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the agency disclosed that the public toilet located at Ijora Olopa via Nipost was shut down on February 24, 2026. The closure followed what it described as the deliberate discharge of raw sewage and wastewater into the environment using a pumping machine.

According to the agency, the act constituted a public nuisance, environmental pollution, and a serious threat to human health. It stressed that such practices undermine public sanitation standards and pose avoidable risks to residents.
LSWMO explained that the enforcement action forms part of its statutory mandate to safeguard public health and curb environmental degradation across Lagos State.
In a related development, the agency also sealed a property at 22b Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Coker Market Road, Coker-Aguda, Surulere, following complaints about the persistent discharge of untreated wastewater into the surroundings.

LSWMO said it investigated the allegations and confirmed that the activities at the property were creating significant environmental and health hazards for the community.
Warning against further violations, LSWMO stated that breaches of wastewater regulations would not be tolerated. It emphasised that acts of environmental nuisance would attract appropriate sanctions, including possible prosecution in accordance with state laws.
The agency urged residents to adopt proper wastewater management and hygienic practices to promote environmental sustainability and public health. It also encouraged members of the public to report infractions through its official lines — 08022022397 and 07025332163 — or via its social media platforms.
