Madugu warns Super Falcons against complacency ahead of Benin Republic clash

Super Falcons coach, Justin Madugu, has cautioned his players to stay grounded ahead of Tuesday’s second-leg clash against the Amazons of Benin Republic in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers.
Despite holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg in Lomé, secured through strikes from Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo, the coach insists the game is still far from being over.
Speaking ahead of today’s (Tuesday) second-leg tie, billed to kick off at 4 p.m. at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, Madugu stressed the need for his side to approach the return leg with complete seriousness.
“Benin showed they are a strong side with several foreign-based players. We know it will not be easy, so we are preparing to give our best. Our goal remains to qualify for the WAFCON and continue our journey toward the 2027 World Cup in Brazil,” he said.
He acknowledged the quality of the Beninoise squad, which has about ten professional players competing across Europe and North Africa, and warned against complacency.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie is expected to start again, supported by defenders Michelle Alozie, Osinachi Ohale, Tosin Demehin, and Ashley Plumptre. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Deborah Abiodun, and Taiwo Afolabi will likely control the midfield, while Ihezuo, Okoronkwo, and Folashade Ijamilusi are set to lead the front line.
Madugu also has attacking reinforcements at his disposal, including Asisat Oshoala, Joy Omewa, and Kafayat Mafisere, who could feature depending on the game’s flow.
The aggregate winner will secure a place in the 14th edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, billed for Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
