Makinde moves to secure AfCFTA listing for Oyo State

By Adejayan Gbenga –

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has restated his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare and economic prosperity of residents through global trade partnerships.

Makinde disclosed on Saturday that he visited the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat in Accra, Ghana, to submit Oyo State’s post-launch engagement report — a key step in the process for the state to be officially listed as a participant in the AfCFTA agreement.

He expressed gratitude to the AfCFTA Secretary-General, Wamkele Mene, for his continuous support in facilitating Oyo State’s engagement with the continental trade body.

“As I promised the good people of Oyo State, we will continue to prioritise your welfare until our last day in office. This is why we visited the AfCFTA Secretariat in Accra to submit our post-launch engagement report as part of the administrative processes required for Oyo State to be officially listed as a party to the agreement,” Makinde said.

The governor emphasised that Oyo’s involvement in the AfCFTA will enhance cross-border trade, improve market access for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), empower entrepreneurs, and create more job opportunities for young people.

Makinde affirmed that his administration remains focused on positioning Oyo State as a leading hub for trade and economic growth within the West African region.
