Makinde pledges to turn Ibadan Airport into international aviation hub

By Adejayan Gbenga –
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has said that the ongoing upgrade of the Ibadan Airport to international standards is part of his administration’s plan to position the state as a major player in Nigeria’s aviation and economic development.
The governor stated this while hosting members of the Women in Aviation International (Nigeria Chapter), who were in Ibadan for their annual conference themed “Connect, Engage, Inspire.” The event, held at the Western Hall, Secretariat, Agodi, runs from November 4 to 7, 2025.
Makinde, represented by his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, commended women for their growing influence in the aviation industry, describing their professionalism and dedication as vital to the sector’s growth. He said their choice of Ibadan as the host city reflected confidence in the state’s expanding relevance in national aviation affairs.
According to the governor, the ongoing upgrade of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport is not merely an infrastructural project but a strategic effort to make Oyo a hub for local and international air travel. He stressed that aviation is a global industry that connects nations and drives development.
Makinde explained that Ibadan’s historical place in Nigeria’s aviation history, as home to the country’s first aerodrome, inspired the decision to transform the airport into a modern international facility. He said the project would attract investment, promote tourism, and create more economic opportunities for residents.
“When the upgrade is completed, aircraft will be able to take off from Ibadan to any part of the world. That’s the level of ambition we are pursuing,” the governor said. He added that his administration would continue to support initiatives that encourage inclusion and professional excellence, especially among women.
Makinde also announced that the Oyo State Government was sponsoring the Women in Aviation conference as part of its commitment to strengthening partnerships with professional bodies and promoting development in the aviation sector.
In her remarks, President of the association, Dr. Rejoice Ndudinachi, commended Governor Makinde for his support and for hosting the event in Ibadan. She said the conference aims to inspire collaboration, empower young women, and expand mentorship and scholarship opportunities in aviation and aerospace.
