Nigeria to introduce biometric screening at airports, says Keyamo

By Kunle Sanni –

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the introduction of a biometric verification system across Nigeria’s airports to enhance security and improve passenger identification processes.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this while briefing journalists after the FEC meeting held on Thursday at the State House, Abuja.

According to the minister, the new system will link passengers’ National Identification Numbers (NIN) to airport security and boarding databases, ensuring that only verified individuals are allowed to board flights within and outside the country.

“We have too many anonymous people boarding aircraft—many using fake identities—which is a serious security concern. The new biometric system will verify every traveler’s NIN before they board, confirming that they are who they claim to be,” Keyamo said.

He explained that the initiative aligns with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and will improve the safety and integrity of Nigeria’s aviation operations.

“Why did we do NIN? It’s for proper identification. Now, we are linking it directly to our airports so that both local and international travelers can be verified in real time,” he added.

The minister further noted that the move will enable security agencies to monitor air travel more effectively and curb identity-related crimes in the aviation sector.
