Makinde questions Tinubu government’s competence, national unity

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying it has fallen short of expectations for national unity and competence.

Makinde made the remarks on Tuesday during a media briefing in Ibadan, noting that he had repeatedly hoped the Tinubu government would prioritise competence over political considerations to reset the country.

“I’ve mentioned it more than maybe three or four times, that our expectation would be a government of national unity, a government of national competence, where you can start the process of resetting this country,” he said.

He questioned whether those expectations had been met. “Is it what we are seeing right now? Is it a government of national competence? Is it a government of national unity? The answer is no,” Makinde added.

The governor recounted his involvement in the ministerial nomination process, saying Tinubu asked him to recommend a developmental economist for the position of Minister of Budget and Economic Planning. Makinde submitted a qualified Oyo State indigene, but the nominee was not selected; instead, Bayo Adelabu was appointed Minister of Power.

“If Adelabu was selected to strengthen the APC in Oyo State, he does not have the capacity,” Makinde said, adding that he had advised the President accordingly.

Makinde further revealed that Tinubu personally requested him to organise the APC in Oyo State, a request he declined.
“I said, no, sir. I can never help you organise the APC in our state because I am of the PDP,” he stated.
