Makinde set to host opposition party leaders’ summit in Ibadan

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is set to host a high-level National Summit of Opposition Political Party Leaders scheduled for Saturday, April 25, in Ibadan, as opposition figures move to deepen coordination ahead of growing national political and economic concerns.

The summit, to be held at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House at 10:00 a.m., is expected to bring together senior representatives of Nigeria’s opposition parties to deliberate on what organizers describe as urgent national challenges, including economic hardship, insecurity, and declining confidence in democratic institutions.

According to an invitation dated April 21, 2026, addressed to the National Chairman of the Labour Party, the gathering comes at what organizers call a “defining crossroads” for the country, citing rising cost of living, insecurity, and alleged institutional bias affecting opposition activity.

The meeting is themed “National Opposition Political Party Leaders’ Summit for Democratic Renewal, Unity, and National Rescue.” It is designed to foster unity among opposition blocs and develop coordinated strategies around electoral reforms, institutional strengthening, and rebuilding public trust.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is listed as Special Guest of Honour, adding political weight to the gathering expected to draw wide national attention.

The summit is being convened under the co-chairmanship of Dr. Kashim Ibrahim Imam and former Minister of Information Jerry Gana, who jointly signed the invitation letter.

Delegates traveling from Abuja have been advised to arrive at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport for onward chartered flight arrangements to Ibadan.
