Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday, reaffirmed that his administration would not act contrary to the Constitution in matters concerning the application of Sharia law.
Makinde made this statement at the Iftar programme organized by the Oyo State Government at the Presidential Lodge, Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, in response to reports of Sharia implementation in some Southwestern states.
He clarified that while a Sharia panel could serve as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism, the courts remain the constitutionally empowered authority to adjudicate disputes. He reassured that his administration would always uphold constitutional principles.
According to the governor, his administration is committed to fostering religious harmony and unity in the state and will not tolerate any attempts by individuals or groups to incite division.
Makinde noted that while some may exploit religion for political gain, his government remains focused on the sustainable development of the state for the benefit of both current residents and future generations.
He expressed appreciation to the Islamic faithful in Oyo for their prayers, support, and cooperation, acknowledging their contributions to the state’s progress.
Also extending his gratitude to legislators, the judiciary, and the people of Oyo State for their collaboration, he commended the security agencies for their efforts in maintaining peace and security.
The governor urged all residents to resist actions that could disrupt the state’s peaceful atmosphere.
