Man rescued after jumping into Lagos lagoon from Third Mainland Bridge

A 33-year-old man was rescued after jumping into the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge on Tuesday.

The man, identified simply as Olu, reportedly drove a silver Lexus SUV to the Yaba axis of the bridge, where he parked before leaping into the water.

He was promptly sighted, prompting the Divisional Police Officer in Yaba, CSP Adegbemi Isiaka, to mobilise a nearby fisherman who assisted in rescuing him. The victim was subsequently taken to a hospital for medical attention.

Sources disclosed that the man, a resident of Ibadan, had travelled to Lagos with the intention of taking his life following financial losses from cryptocurrency investments.

“He drove to Lagos from Ibadan just to jump from the Third Mainland Bridge. He said he lost money in his investment and could not handle it. Fortunately, he was spotted immediately and rescued,” an eyewitness said.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident, stating that the man has since been discharged from hospital and released to his family.

She added that the victim’s relatives have undertaken to enrol him in a rehabilitation programme, while he has been cautioned against attempting such an act again.
