BREAKING: Ex-Ondo Gov, Mimiko, dumps PDP over ‘personal reasons’
By Boye Oyeyemi
Former Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, ending his long-standing association with the party.
The resignation was conveyed in a letter addressed to the PDP chairman of Ward 7 in Ondo West Local Government Area, dated April 10, 2026, and personally signed by the ex-governor.
In the letter, Mimiko said his decision to quit the party was based on personal considerations, noting that it takes immediate effect. “I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party with effect from April 10, 2026, for strictly personal reasons,” he stated.
He explained that he had distanced himself from party activities for some time, a move which gave him the opportunity to reflect and consult widely before arriving at the decision.
Mimiko, however, stressed that he remains committed to Nigeria’s democratic process and would continue to work with others to promote national development.
The former governor added that his exit was taken without bitterness, expressing goodwill towards members of the party.
Reacting to the development, political observers in Ondo State said the development did not come as a surprise, citing the earlier defection of many of his loyalists to the All Progressives Congress ahead of the last governorship election.
When contacted, his former Chief Press Secretary, Eni Akinsola, confirmed the development, stating that Mimiko had indeed submitted his resignation letter but declined to provide further details.
