Mimiko denies appointment as Jonathan’s Southwest campaign consultant

By Boye Oyeyemi –
Former Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, has dismissed reports claiming he was appointed to head a South-West consultation team for a yet-to-be-announced campaign of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The report, which was published by a national daily, had claimed that Mimiko was chosen to lead consultations ahead of a possible political move by Jonathan.
However, in a statement posted on Facebook by his former Chief Press Secretary, Eni Akinsola, Mimiko described the publication as “a concocted rumour dressed as news”, noting that the newspaper itself admitted it could not reach Mimiko for confirmation before publishing the story.
“The falsehood in the report is obvious from the get-go. It is just the work of a journalist flying with concocted rumour dressed as news,” the clarification stated.
It added that while Mimiko continues to hold former President Jonathan in high esteem, he “has neither been reached nor appointed for any campaign that remains speculative at best.”
The statement further stressed that Mimiko, fondly called Iroko, remains focused on personal and public engagements, not political job-hunting, despite renewed political activity in the country.
“As politics takes a more frenetic pace, such cooked stories will not be scarce, as they concern political figures like Iroko who have chosen to remain low for now,” it concluded.
