Minister of Tourism celebrates Nigeria’s cultural legacy at King Kosoko event

The Honourable Minister of Tourism, Lola Ade-John, has emphasized the importance of preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage during her keynote address at the “King Kosoko – The Return 1862” event, held on Lagos Island. The annual celebration pays tribute to King Kosoko, a historical figure whose leadership continues to inspire the nation.

Speaking to attendees, including traditional leaders, cultural enthusiasts, and government officials, Minister Ade-John commended Prince Abiola Kosoko, the Oloja of Lagos-elect, for his dedication to maintaining Nigeria’s rich cultural traditions. She described the event as more than a historical commemoration, emphasizing its role in fostering national unity and pride.

“King Kosoko’s return in 1862 symbolizes the resilience of Lagos and the enduring spirit of Nigeria. It is our responsibility to ensure that this heritage remains vibrant for future generations,” she stated.

The Minister also highlighted the vast potential of Nigeria’s tourism sector. Although it contributed nearly 5% to the nation’s GDP in 2019, she pointed out that the sector is still largely untapped.

She urged Nigerians to explore the country’s abundant cultural assets, which include over 1,000 historical sites and 800 festivals, as a means of boosting domestic tourism.

“The tourism potential in Nigeria is immense. Events like the King Kosoko celebration not only showcase our unique culture and history but also offer both local and international visitors an opportunity to experience the richness of our heritage,” Ade-John added.

In her concluding remarks, the Minister reiterated the Federal Ministry of Tourism’s commitment to promoting Nigeria’s cultural and tourism sectors, aligning with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

She expressed her appreciation to the event organizers, performers, and all participants, recognizing their vital contributions to the preservation of Nigeria’s cultural legacy.
