Minister warns against paying for national honours as 2024 award process begins

The federal government has issued a warning against any payments for national honours, emphasizing that the nomination forms and processes for the awards are free of charge.

Zaphaniah Jisalo, Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, stated that anyone who pays money to individuals or groups in relation to the awards does so at their own risk.

In a statement released by Anastasia Ogbonna, Head of Information and Public Relations, Jisalo reiterated that the National Honours are meant to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation and its people.

Jisalo made this announcement during a top management meeting in Abuja, revealing that President Bola Tinubu has approved the commencement of the 2024 National Honours Awards. These awards will honor Nigerians and international friends who have made significant contributions to the country’s development or excelled in their respective fields.

He emphasized that both the nomination forms and the process are free of charge and cautioned that any payment to individuals or groups is made at the payer’s risk.

Jisalo urged the public to await the official Call for Nominations and to propose candidates who have distinguished themselves through their service to the nation.

“The awards process is governed by the National Honours Award Act CAP N43 of the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, which has been in effect since October 1, 1963,” Jisalo added.
