Ministerial nominee collapses during Senate screening

A ministerial nominee, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, collapsed during a Senate screening session on Wednesday, causing immediate commotion within the chamber.

The nominee from Kadun State had been speaking about himself and was ready to attend to questions from senators when he suddenly slumped to the floor.

This prompted a quick response from concerned senators who rushed to his aid.

Lawal was part of a trio of new ministerial nominees sent to the Senate for screening by President Bola Tinubu alongside Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim from Kwara State and Mr. Ayodele Olawande from Ondo State.

The sequence of events took place following a motion by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, to extend the sitting time beyond the usual 2 pm cutoff, aiming to ensure that all items on the day’s agenda were addressed. However, the situation dramatically changed when Lawal collapsed.

In response, the Senate quickly transitioned into a closed-door session. Inside the chamber, frantic efforts were made to revive Lawal, as senators and medical personnel worked diligently to address the situation.
