Monarch petitions AIG over alleged threat to life by Osun Speaker
By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –
The Alasi of Asi in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State, His Royal Majesty Oba Oyewale Olasunkanmi Isaac, has petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone XI, Osogbo, over an alleged threat to his life by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun.
In the petition filed through his legal counsel, Chief K.E. Ngwoke, the monarch claimed that the Speaker threatened to kill him during a phone call to one of his wives, Olori Idowu, warning him not to return to his palace on July 27, 2025.
According to the petition, the alleged threat followed a disagreement between both parties over the arrest and detention of a young man in the community, which the monarch alleged was influenced by the Speaker.
Oba Oyewale stated that the youth was arrested on what he described as false allegations, charged to court, and subsequently remanded in prison custody. He said efforts to get clarity from the Speaker over the incident were met with insults and further threats.
The petition also claimed that the Speaker told the monarch’s wife that the king would be killed if he returned to the palace on the specified date.
“Our client has not been able to return to his palace in Asi due to the threat issued by this suspect, who, by his position, ought to uphold the law. Our client’s life is in palpable danger, and only swift action by security agencies can prevent harm,” the petition read in part.
Reacting to the allegations, the Speaker denied threatening the monarch, claiming instead that he was the one being threatened by the traditional ruler.
Egbedun said his convoy was attacked by suspected thugs at Okuku about three weeks ago while returning to Asi, leading him to alert security agencies. One suspect was reportedly arrested in connection with the attack.
“Following this assault, I received a threatening phone call from the Alasi, instructing me not to allow the suspect to be arraigned and warning me against arresting others involved. These threats, including some directed at my security aides, are unacceptable and suggest an attempt to obstruct justice,” the Speaker said.
He added that the monarch had continued to pressure him for the release of the arrested suspect, alleging persistent threats aimed at silencing him.
