NAFDAC cracks down on substandard bakeries, water factories in Rivers

In a bid to safeguard public health, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has launched a rigorous operation targeting substandard and unregistered bakeries and water factories in the Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State.
This was contained in a post by the agency on its official X handle on Wednesday, revealing the crackdown was sparked by thorough investigations, surveillance, and consumer grievances over substandard items circulating in the vicinity.
“Over a three-day period, NAFDAC officials, aided by law enforcement personnel from Finima and Bonny divisional headquarters, shuttered 10 bakeries and 8 table water factories found to be churning out counterfeit and unhealthy products”, it read.

According to NAFDAC, some of the closed facilities were operating in unsanitary conditions, while other were using popular brand names without proper authorization.
The agency added that many of the bakeries lacked NAFDAC registration, while others sported expired licenses or had relocated without notifying the regulatory body.

In a stern warning, NAFDAC reminded non-compliant producers to promptly renew their licenses, emphasizing repercussions for those flouting regulations.
“This move underscores NAFDAC’s unwavering dedication to upholding consumer safety and product quality,” it stated.
