NBC warns broadcasters against bullying, ethical breaches ahead of 2027 polls

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has cautioned broadcasters against bullying of guests, misuse of platforms, and other violations of the broadcasting code ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement, the commission expressed concern over a rise in breaches of the 6th Edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code across news, current affairs, and political programmes.
It noted that some broadcast stations have drifted from their responsibility of ensuring accurate, balanced, and professional content, adding that it would enforce stricter compliance going forward.
“As we approach the 2027 General Elections, the commission hereby notifies all broadcasters and stakeholders that it will enforce strict and uncompromised compliance with every provision of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, particularly those relating to fairness, balance, accuracy, hate speech, incitement and respect for constitutional bodies,” it stated.
The NBC also raised concerns over declining professionalism among presenters and anchors, citing repeated ethical violations in broadcast content.
It referenced provisions of the code requiring fairness and balance in programming, as well as prohibitions against hate speech, incitement, and divisive content.
The commission further warned against intimidation of guests on broadcast platforms and stressed the need for neutrality in programme presentation.
It said it would henceforth hold presenters and broadcasters accountable for any breaches, including expressing personal opinions as fact, bullying guests, or denying fair hearing to opposing views.
