NCAA warns airlines against halfway deportations of Nigerian passengers

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a stern warning to international airlines regarding the increasing number of Nigerians being deported after being airlifted halfway to their destinations.
In a statement released on Thursday, by Michael Achimugu, the Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, the NCAA decried the refusal of entry or denial of boarding at intermediate transit stops due to visa and travel restrictions. It emphasized that such actions are completely unacceptable.
“These practices are causing unnecessary distress to passengers who, after being cleared for travel, find themselves denied entry or returned to Nigeria upon arrival at transit stops,” the statement read.
It added that it is the responsibility of airlines to inform passengers of any potential entry restrictions prior to travel, ensuring they are not stranded midway.
The NCAA cited the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1), highlighting airlines’ duty to inform passengers of visa and entry requirements before issuing tickets or allowing boarding. Airlines must screen and provide up-to-date information on travel documents and visa requirements to avoid such incidents.
“In response to these ongoing issues, the NCAA has announced immediate enforcement actions.
“Any airline found guilty of engaging in these practices will face regulatory penalties, including fines, suspension of operations, or other measures deemed necessary,” the statement read.
The NCAA concluded by urging international airlines operating in Nigeria to adhere to these regulations, stressing the importance of upholding the integrity of the aviation industry and ensuring the well-being of passengers.
