NCC, Judiciary, partner to strengthen Nigeria’s digital laws

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) have launched the 2024 Annual Workshop for Judges on Legal and Regulatory Issues in the Communications Industry.
Held in Lagos, the workshop brings together leaders from the judiciary and telecommunications sectors to examine the judiciary’s role in accelerating digital advancements nationwide.
Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the NCC, highlighted the critical need for close collaboration between regulatory bodies and the judiciary to create a secure, sustainable digital environment in Nigeria.
Maida stressed that digital transformation affects every sector, including the justice system, and highlighted the importance of dependable telecommunications infrastructure.
“The judiciary plays a crucial role in safeguarding these vital resources,” he said, referencing a recent Presidential Order that designates telecom infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure. This designation, Maida explained, is intended to protect telecom assets from vandalism and tampering, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity and access to essential digital services.
In her keynote address, Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, highlighted the judiciary’s vital role in addressing emerging digital challenges such as cyber threats and data privacy concerns.
She acknowledged the risks consumers face from cybercrime and emphasized the need for judicial officers to stay updated on best practices for resolving disputes related to digital transactions, particularly in telecommunications and banking.
“The judiciary is not a passive observer in the digital transformation journey; it is a key enabler of this evolution,” said Justice Kekere-Ekun.
She emphasized the importance of maintaining transparency and efficiency in handling cases related to digital and telecommunications issues, noting that such diligence would foster investor confidence and support Nigeria’s broader economic goals.
Both leaders expressed optimism that the workshop would deepen participants’ understanding of digital jurisprudence and consumer protection.
Justice Kekere-Ekun commended the NCC’s efforts to protect consumers from unfair practices by service providers, assuring that the judiciary remains committed to supporting the sector through clear legal interpretations and prompt justice delivery.
