NDLEA officer killed during drug raid in Rivers, 6 suspects arrested

An officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) was killed during a drug raid in Rivers State, where six suspects were arrested and a cache of illicit substances recovered.

The operation, carried out on Friday, February 6, 2026, targeted a notorious drug enclave known as Ama Hausa in Bonny Island, a location widely identified as a hub for criminal activity.

During the raid, operatives recovered various illicit substances, including cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, skunk and tramadol.

The operation, however, turned tragic when Chief Narcotic Agent Sadiq Bako Mujahid sustained severe head injuries during a violent confrontation with suspected drug dealers and their associates. The suspects allegedly mobilised armed hoodlums to resist arrest, leading to an attack on the operatives.

Mujahid was rushed to the Bonny Island General Hospital for emergency treatment but later died from his injuries.

Despite the resistance, NDLEA operatives succeeded in apprehending all six primary targets of the operation. Among those arrested was the alleged gang leader, Genesis George Benson, who authorities said played a key role in the attack that led to the officer’s death.

Other suspects taken into custody include ThankGod Okon, Shamsudden Isah, Muhammed Musa, Adamu Muhammed and Muhammed Yusuf. Officials confirmed that a substantial quantity of illegal drugs was seized during the raid, highlighting the scale of criminal activities in the area.

Reacting to the incident, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the bravery of the officers involved. He described the late Mujahid as a disciplined and courageous officer who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation, and extended condolences to his family, colleagues and the Rivers State Command.
