The National Economic Council (NEC) has announced the formation of a high-level committee to accelerate the implementation of the Electricity Reform Act of 2023 and the National Electrification Strategy and Implementation Plan.

The decision was made during a NEC meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the State House in Abuja.

Briefing State House reporters after the meeting on Thursday, Ondo State Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa revealed the committee’s composition. It will be chaired by Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu and include Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari, Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Power, and the Managing Directors of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC).

The NEC emphasized that the initiative reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to a reformed and decentralized electricity framework aimed at improving regional energy access and strengthening the nation’s power infrastructure.

“This committee represents a crucial step toward addressing Nigeria’s electricity challenges and fostering sustainable growth in the power sector,” Governor Ayedatiwa stated.

The Electricity Reform Act of 2023, passed earlier this year, is designed to enhance the efficiency of electricity generation, distribution, and regulation, with a focus on state-level participation and private sector collaboration.

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to boosting electrification in both rural and urban areas, highlighting the strategy’s importance in unlocking economic potential and driving broader national development goals.
