New vice-chancellor to emerge at Yakubu Gowon University (formerly University of Abuja)

A new Vice-Chancellor is set to emerge soon at the Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as the University of Abuja, as the institution prepares to begin the formal process of appointing a substantive head.
According to an internal memorandum signed by the Deputy Registrar (Academic), Mustapha Tanimu, on behalf of the Registrar, members of the University Senate have been invited to the 92nd Extra-Ordinary Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
The meeting, which will hold at the Academic Conference Centre on the university’s main campus, will have as its key agenda the election of a Senate representative to the Joint Senate/Council Selection Board —a statutory body responsible for overseeing the appointment of a substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The memo, referenced UA/R/EOS/92 and dated October 31, 2025, also listed other items such as the Chairman’s opening remarks, opening and closing prayers, and any other business.
Sources within the institution suggest that the appointment process will be closely watched stakeholders, following the it’s recent renaming to Yakubu Gowon University in honour of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd).
