Newcastle ends Carrick’s unbeaten run as Manchester United boss

Substitute William Osula scored a superb late winner as 10-man Newcastle United handed Michael Carrick his first defeat as Manchester United manager.

Carrick, who grew up watching Newcastle from the Gallowgate End, had warned his players that the stadium was a “tough place to go” even before a ball was kicked.

It proved to be true—even after Newcastle midfielder Jacob Ramsey was sent off in the first half—as the spirited hosts rallied in front of a raucous St James’ Park crowd.

Both sides looked set to share the spoils after Casemiro’s header cancelled out Anthony Gordon’s penalty. But in the 90th minute, Osula cut inside the box and lashed the ball past a stunned Senne Lammens, sending the stadium into raptures.

The scenes were a stark contrast to first-half stoppage time, when Newcastle players, staff, and supporters erupted in fury after Ramsey was sent off for a second booking. Referee Peter Bankes judged that the midfielder had dived while attempting to win a penalty after nudging the ball past goalkeeper Lammens.

Newcastle quickly channelled their anger, and Gordon was awarded a spot-kick after being brought down by Bruno Fernandes inside the box. Gordon calmly slotted the penalty down the middle to open the scoring, netting his 15th goal of the campaign.

However, Manchester United, who have recovered more points (nine) from losing positions than any other Premier League side in 2026, were not behind for long.
