NFF President Gusau declares objectives achieved with Unity Cup, Russia friendly

Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON), President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has expressed satisfaction with the federation’s recent activities involving the Super Eagles. Over the past 12 days, the team participated in the Four-Nation Unity Cup Tournament in London and played a friendly match against Russia’s senior national team in Moscow. Gusau confirmed that the NFF has successfully met its objectives through these engagements.

The primary goal, according to Gusau, was to create opportunities for the coaching staff to evaluate new players who could strengthen the team moving forward. “I had some conversations with Eric Chelle, and I could see that he was pleased with the opportunities the Unity Cup and the friendly match against Russia provided for him and his assistants,” the NFF president said.

Reflecting on the Super Eagles’ performance, Gusau highlighted their victory in the Unity Cup, where Nigeria defeated Ghana and Jamaica, as well as the exciting draw against Russia. He expressed satisfaction with the contributions of most players who featured in these matches.

Beyond the established regulars, the Unity Cup allowed the coaching staff to assess emerging talents such as Benjamin Frederick, Felix Agu, Christantus Uche, and Igoh Ogbu. The team also observed more of Cyriel Dessers. Home-based players like Papa Daniel Mustapha, Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, Sodiq Ismail, and Collins Ogwueze also made positive impressions.

In the friendly against Russia, Uche continued to impress, while Tolu Arokodare scored a notable poacher’s goal. Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye delivered an excellent performance on his return, and captain Ekong effectively marshaled the defense, according to Gusau.

The NFF president emphasized that the team now has multiple options across defense, midfield, and attack. “I am quite satisfied with the team’s output in the three matches,” he said, underscoring the depth and versatility gained from these games.

Looking ahead, Gusau is confident that the technical crew is pleased with the expanded pool of players as Nigeria prepares for the FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. “We now have good options in all areas, and this will be crucial as we move forward,” he concluded.

In summary, the recent fixtures have provided valuable insights and strengthened the Super Eagles’ squad, positioning Nigeria well for upcoming international challenges.
