Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye says he is ready to fight for the Super Eagles’ number one jersey.

Okoye, who has been playing second fiddle to Stanley Nwabali, believes his performance in Nigeria’s recent friendly match against Russia could help actualise his dream.

He got the starting role against Russia and was able to put up a solid performance, denying multiple scoring attempts from Russian players like Maksim Glushenkov and Aleksandr Mostovoi.

In a chat, the goalkeeper expressed his delight at being back with the Super Eagles and his commitment to earning his place in the team.

“I’m very happy to be back with the Super Eagles, having been out for a long time. I’m happy to get called up again, and I’m just enjoying every moment here and waiting for my chance and opportunity.”

The light-skinned goaltender acknowledged the strong performance of current first-choice, Stanley Nwabali.

“Of course, we know what Nwabali has done for our country. He’s a very good goalkeeper and I think he deserves it.”

Okoye emphasized his ambition to replicate his club form on the international stage, stating, “I never brought my quality to the game, unfortunately. I haven’t reached that point yet,” he admitted.
