NFF President Gusau reaffirms commitment to grassroots football revival

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON), has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to grassroots football development, describing it as the foundation for sustainable growth of the sport in Nigeria.

Gusau made the statement on Wednesday at the monthly Nigeria National League (NNL) Awards Ceremony in Abuja. He emphasized that just as no one can build a structure from the rooftop, football must be nurtured from its roots for lasting success.

He noted that encouraging performance through recognition is vital, stating that the NNL Awards serve as a motivation for players, coaches, and administrators, while promoting a culture of excellence across the leagues.

“One of my key commitments is to invigorate grassroots football and associated leagues. We are witnessing tangible progress after two and a half years, and by the end of our tenure, Nigerians will see more positive developments in the domestic league,” Gusau said.

He also highlighted a major milestone — the alignment of Nigeria’s football calendar with international schedules, an achievement he said had been long desired and deemed almost impossible in the past.

“This season is the first time our football calendar aligns with global standards, covering both the men’s and women’s leagues,” he said, adding that such synchronization will enhance participation and competitiveness.

Gusau expressed optimism that continued reforms and investments at the grassroots level would ensure a bright future for Nigerian football, especially in nurturing young talent and improving league structures.

Dignitaries at the event included NFF Second Vice President and NPFL Chairman, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye; Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Prince Adeyinka Adeboye; NNL Chairman, Chief George Aluo; NNL CEO, Mr. Emmanuel Attah; and former NFF General Secretary, Ambassador Fanny Amun (MON), among others.
