Censors board to modify Ini Edo’s Christmas season movie over CAN protest

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has said it will modify the title of a Christmas season movie starring Ini Edo following protests by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and concerns raised by members of the public.

The board gave the assurance after reactions trailed the film titled “A Very Dirty Christmas”, which critics said could offend Christian sensibilities and undermine the significance of the Christmas celebration.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the NFVCB said it had taken note of the concerns, adding that although it had not received any formal complaint from CAN, the reactions were important and deserved attention.

The board explained that the film was approved and classified after undergoing the statutory censorship and classification process, during which it was assessed within its narrative and thematic context. It stressed that the approval was not intended to disparage or trivialise the Christian faith or the essence of Christmas, but was considered a fictional and creative work.

However, the NFVCB acknowledged that public perception is a critical element of effective regulation. It disclosed that it had engaged the producers of the film and requested a modification of the title to avoid interpretations that could be considered offensive and to prevent unnecessary religious tension.

The board also noted that under Section 39(1) of the National Film and Video Censors Board Act, it is empowered to order the withdrawal of any film from exhibition for further review when such action is deemed necessary in the public interest.

Reaffirming its commitment to religious sensitivity and peaceful coexistence, the NFVCB said it would continue to engage CAN, faith-based organisations, industry stakeholders and the general public to ensure that films exhibited in Nigeria promote understanding, respect for religious diversity and national unity, while supporting responsible creativity.

The board appealed for patience and cooperation from all stakeholders as it continues to discharge its mandate in the overall interest of the Nigerian public.
