The Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) has proposed a strategic partnership with the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy to enhance the preservation and promotion of Nigeria’s cultural heritage through architectural design.
During a recent meeting in Abuja, the President of the NIA, Arc. Adeniyi Mobolaji FNIA, PNIA, engaged with the Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, to outline the institute’s vision for collaboration. Arc. Mobolaji emphasized the critical role architecture plays in shaping national identity and proposed various areas for joint efforts, including the design of iconic buildings, the preservation of national monuments, and the inclusion of architects on cultural agency boards.
“Architecture not only creates the physical environment in which people live but also serves as a reflection of a society’s culture and values,” Mobolaji stated. “We believe that by collaborating with the Ministry, we can advocate for architecture to be recognized as a creative industry and explore initiatives like digital architecture, public art installations, and campaigns to promote architectural heritage and design excellence.”
Responding to the NIA’s proposal, Minister Musawa acknowledged the importance of architecture within the Creative Arts Industry and expressed her commitment to a partnership that would leverage the expertise of architects in key cultural projects.
“As we advance initiatives such as the Naija Creative City in Abuja, along with museums and cultural centers, the involvement of the Institute of Architects will be crucial in showcasing our rich culture and heritage,” said Musawa. “I am confident that together, we can create a built environment that embodies our national identity and reflects our collective aspirations.”
Minister Musawa further highlighted the essential role of creative talent in societal development and expressed her eagerness to collaborate with the NIA to make a lasting impact on Nigeria’s cultural and artistic landscape.
