Niger State, Benin Republic sign multi-billion dollar agriculture partnership

The Niger State Government has signed a multi-billion-dollar Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Republic of Benin through its Special Purpose Vehicle, Sonama AG Mech Ltd to enhance agricultural collaboration between the regions.
The agreement, titled the “Cotton Common Platform Project,” aims to boost the production of cotton, maize, and soybean across the Borgu region bordering the two countries.
The MoU, signed yesterday in Cotonou, marks an unprecedented step toward transforming agricultural productivity in Niger State. Under the agreement, both parties will work to produce 450,000 tons of cotton using the high-yield model successfully implemented in Benin.
Beyond cotton, the project will also support the cultivation of maize and soybean across an estimated 550,000 hectares of land by 2030. The initiative is expected to create over one million jobs while promoting sustainable mechanization, irrigation, and crop rotation practices.
The partnership will also establish 55 technical centers dedicated to training mechanics, drivers, and field agronomists. Benin will provide expertise in agricultural research and market development, while Niger State offers vast arable land and logistical support.
Farmers will benefit from subsidized high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and tailored farm solutions. The project also emphasizes soil conservation and advanced irrigation techniques to ensure long-term sustainability.
Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago, who signed the agreement on behalf of Niger State, expressed appreciation to the Beninese government for the collaboration and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for enabling Nigerian sub-national entities to engage directly with international investors.
“This partnership reflects our commitment to agricultural transformation and cross-border cooperation. It will strengthen food security, create jobs, and promote shared prosperity for both nations,” Governor Bago said.
